The JAFCO INSULATED SHORT CIRCUIT BAR is required to be used by correctly trained personnel in accordance with Network Rail Standards:
NR/WI/ELP/3091 DC Electrified Line Work Instructions
NR/WI/ELP/27173 Application of a Network Rail Standard Short Circuit Bar in an emergency
It should be carried on trains for use in trains for use in an emergency, and for the protection of passengers alighting to the track under supervision, from a train stopped by failure of accident.
It should also be used to protect railway operating or maintenance personnel whilst applying or removing Short Circuit Straps, or similar equipment, during planned electrical isolation of the conductor rail.
It is approved for use on Network Rail DC electrified lines, but must not be used on any London Underground 4th rail electrified line.
The JAFCO INSULATED SHORT CIRCUIT BAR conforms to Network Rail Product Specification NR/PS/ELP/00006, and is covered by Network Rail Product Acceptance Certificate No. PA 05/00407.
If the SHORT CIRCUIT BAR is used in an emergency to short a live rail the CONTACT ANVIL must be replaced, also supplied by JAFCO.
